The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to the east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The country also possesses several territories in the Caribbean and Pacific. At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km) and with over 309 million people, the United States is the third or fourth largest country by total area, and the third largest both by land area and population. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The U.S. economy is the world's largest national economy, with an estimated 2009 GDP of $14.3 trillion (a quarter of nominal global GDP and a fifth of global GDP at purchasing power parity). Indigenous peoples of Asian origin have inhabited what is now the mainland United States for many thousands of years. This Native American population was greatly reduced by disease and warfare after European contact. The United States was founded by thirteen British colonies located along the Atlantic seaboard. On July 4, 1776, they issued the Declaration of Independence, which proclaimed their right to self-determination and their establishment of a cooperative union. The rebellious states defeated the British Empire in the American Revolution, the first successful colonial war of independence. The current United States Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787; its ratification the following year made the states part of a single republic with a strong central government. The Bill of Rights, comprising ten constitutional amendments guaranteeing many fundamental civil rights and freedoms, was ratified in 1791. In the 19th century, the United States acquired land from France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Russia, and annexed the Republic of Texas and the Republic of Hawaii. Disputes between the agrarian South and industrial North over states' rights and the expansion of the institution of slavery provoked the American Civil War of the 1860s. The North's victory prevented a permanent split of the country and led to the end of legal slavery in the United States. By the 1870s, the national economy was the world's largest. The Spanish–American War and World War I confirmed the country's status as a military power. It emerged from World War II as the first country with nuclear weapons and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union left the United States as the sole superpower. The country accounts for two-fifths of global military spending and is a leading economic, political, and cultural force in the world. From Wikipedia under the

It means we embarking on a new era of understanding and working together in stead if insisting on our way or the highway. Instead of calling everybody with whom we disagree a terrorist and drawing a line in the sand we work with diplomacy on fairness. Instead of world scorn with President Obama we will one again respect of the world we held until the war criminal GWB spit on our Constitution and thumbed his nose common decency so he and Cheney line their pockets at the expense of the hard working Americans. What issue became a major problem for the United States government after the Mexican War? whether slavery should be allowed in the western territories whether Mormons should be allowed to settle in Utah whether the United States should annex Texas whether Americans should migrate to Mexico's northern territories is it: whether the United States should annex Texas? i think it's this one, but i am not sure! Asked by . - Mon Dec 22 09:45:20 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well the War with Mexico War ended in 1848, nd by then Texas was already annexed to USA. That happened in 1845. The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1850, and that was the deal about slavery in the western territories. USA took a whole chunk of land from Mexico at the end of the War with Mexico, and USA did not know what to do about slavery in that area. So that was the major problem USA had: whether slavery should be allowed in the Western Territory Answered by drewdun - Mon Dec 22 10:16:57 2008 How will a United States economic collapse affect Asia?
Q. Apparently, from what I've heard the United States is headed for an economic collapse. What I want to know is how will an Economic Collapse affect Asia? According to Peter Schiff, Asian currency will rise as the US dollar falls. China is looking to be a world economic leader and would lead Asia. Also billionaire Jim Rogers has moved to Singapore and said that China is going to grow. Do any of you feel that any of this is true? What I want to know is how will Asia do if the United States collapses economically? Asked by emartel01 - Sun Mar 30 21:05:44 2008 - - 7 Answers - 3 Comments A. First of all, the US economy is not going to collapse. It's not even clear we're in a recession. The great depression was exacerbated by a fledgling fed that did exactly the opposite of what they should have done. That is, they took liquidity out of the system rather than adding it. Regarding your question, a collapse of the largest economy in the world (we are four, some think five times larger than China in GDP) would send the entire world into a depression. Since we would presumably default on our treasury bonds, of which China and Japan hold the most in the world, countries who hold our bonds as foreign reserves would experience a crisis of liquidity. Also, their export markets would dry up overnight and there would be a run on their… [cont.] Answered by mb - Sun Mar 30 21:26:48 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "united states" This article is for quotes about the United States of America, also known as the USA and the U.S. This theme article needs cleanup.
