Marriage is a social union or legal contract between individuals that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. Such a union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding.

People marry for many reasons, including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious. These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of commitment.

Marriage practices are very diverse across cultures, may take many forms, and are often formalized by a wedding. The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved. In some societies these obligations also extend to certain family members of the married persons. Almost all cultures that recognize marriage also recognize adultery as a violation of the terms of marriage.

Marriage is usually recognized by the state, a religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution irrespective of religious affiliation, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it.

MARRiage!!?
Q. After just a few years of marriage, filled with constant arguments, a young man and his wife decided the only way to save their marriage was to try counseling. They had been at each other's throat for some time and felt that this was their last straw. When they arrived at the counselor's office, the counselor jumped right in and opened the floor for discussion. "What seems to be the problem?" Immediately, the husband held his long face down without anything to say. On the other hand, the wife began talking 90 miles an hour describing all the wrongs within their marriage. After 5...10...15 minutes of listening to the wife, the counselor went over to her, picked her up by her shoulders, kissed her passionately for several minutes, and… [cont.]

Whats the difference between marriage and civil union?
Q. I read somewhere that marriage has more benefits then civil union, but they didn't specify on what they were. Would someone be so kind to tell me the benefits that marriage has that civil union does not?

A. There are a lot of differences. One is that civil unions are not recognized by federal law - there are none of the federal benefits of marriage given to those in civil unions. Also, civil unions are not portable. You cannot take them from state to state. Furthermore, the people I know want to get married. Not civil unioned. Who wants to civil union their beloved, when they could marry them instead?

What encourages people to wait until marriage to have sex?
Q. There are plenty of people who decide to wait to have sex with their partners until marriage and I just don't understand the reasons. If people are in a close-caring relationship, what is the point of waiting until after you have made a strong commitment, such as marriage, to express it?
