A hypothesis (from Greek ὑπόθεσις; plural hypotheses) is a proposed explanation for an observable phenomenon. The term derives from the Greek, ὑποτιθέναι – hypotithenai meaning "to put under" or "to suppose." For a hypothesis to be put forward as a scientific hypothesis, the scientific method requires that one can test it. Scientists generally base scientific hypotheses on previous observations that cannot satisfactorily be explained with the available scientific theories. Even though the words "hypothesis" and "theory" are often used synonymously in common and informal usage, a scientific hypothesis is not the same as a scientific theory. A working hypothesis is a provisionally accepted hypothesis.

In a related but distinguishable usage, the term hypothesis is used for the antecedent of a proposition; thus in proposition "If P, then Q", P denotes the hypothesis (or antecedent); Q can be called a consequent. P is the assumption in a (possibly counterfactual) What If question.

The adjective hypothetical, meaning "having the nature of a hypothesis," or "being assumed to exist as an immediate consequence of a hypothesis," can refer to any of these meanings of the term "hypothesis."

In its ancient usage, hypothesis also refers to a summary of the plot of a classical drama.

A. number 1 is the only acceptable answer, regardless of whatever stipulations The null hypothesis is always "there is no difference is the means other than expected by chance variation. There is no correlation other than expected by chance." So you cannot have a hypothesis that states that one Tx is no different than another, because you are then comparing a null hypothesis to the null hypothesis. This is one of the reasons theories can never really be proved false. Theories are simply discarded when they are useless.

A. When I was growing up it was thought that there was a massive volcano that choked up the atmosphere, causing a death to plant life that radiated up the food chain and eventually caused the death of the dinos. This was supported largely because there was a lot of volcanic activity at the time. The discovery of high concentrations of the element Iridium in the sedimentary layer between the Cretacious and Tertiary periods in the rock record led to another theory which is pretty much accepted today -- death by the results of a massive meteorite impact. See, Iridium occurs on the earth only in the meteorites that make it all the way down to the surface. The high concentrations of iridium in this layer between the era of the dinos and the eras… [cont.]
