In academic philosophy the word has a more specialized meaning, being contrasted with essence, which specifies different forms of existence as well as different identity conditions for objects and properties. Philosophers investigate questions such as "What exists?" "How do we know?" "To what extent are the senses a reliable guide to existence?" "What is the meaning, if any, of assertions of the existence of categories, ideas, and abstractions?" Ontology is the philosophical study of the nature of being, existence or reality in general, as well as of the basic categories of being and their relations. Traditionally listed as a part of the major branch of philosophy known as metaphysics, ontology deals with questions concerning what entities exist or can be said to exist, and how such entities can be grouped, related within a hierarchy, and subdivided according to similarities and differences. Epistemology studies criteria of truth, defining "primary truths" inherently accepted in the investigation of knowledge. The first is existence. It is inherent in every analysis. Its self-evident, à priori nature cannot be consistently doubted, since a person objecting to existence according to some standard of proof must implicitly accept the standard's existence as a premise. Materialism holds that the only thing that exists is matter, that all things are composed of material, and all phenomena (including consciousness) are the result of material interactions. In other words, matter is the only substance. Life is a characteristic that distinguishes objects that have self-sustaining biological processes that exist from those that do not —either because such functions have ceased (death), or else because they lack such functions and are classified as "inanimate." Q. I don't care if you believe in God, I just want to know what you think the best argument you've heard against his existence. For the sake of this question, assume that God is: 1. Eternal, or at least as old as the universe 2. Omnipresent, or at least capable of being many places at once 3. Omnipotent, or so powerful that we wouldn't understand his limitaions 4. Sensient (no Hagelian "Geist", I mean a god that knows he exists and that he is God.) 5. Purposeful. 6. Not "created" or "evolved" or other things that would make him just a better version of us. I am also asking the opposite question, and I would appreciate people answering both questions. Probably the best argument against God goes something like as follows: Defenders of a good, all powerful, and all knowing God have to explain why two kinds of evil exist, not just one. The two kinds are chosen evil (rape, torture, murder, etc.) and unchosen evil (diseases, natural disasters, etc.). First they will say chosen evil must exist so that we can have free will. Okay, let's allow them that. Score a point for their God. Next they will say that unchosen evil must exist so that we can appreciate the good - that good cannot exist except in contrast with evil. There are two things wrong with that answer. First, it admits that God is incapable of creating a world in which good is absolute (non-relative). Second, even if we allow them… [cont.] Answered by brucebirdfield - Tue Jul 11 01:23:45 2006 How do Atheists believe the non existence of so many gods at the same time? Q. For example, a Christian only has to think of 1 God, a Hindu has to believe in thousands. An Atheist has to believe in the non-existence of all the religions combined! But then again, does that mean a Christian believes in the non existence of all gods minus one? Well gee, I guess it would. Ditto for other monotheists such as Muslims and Jews. So answer how they manage to do that, and you'll have the answer to your original question. Answered by Geezah - Thu Nov 19 06:42:13 2009 Why do unbelievers refuse to see the obvious truth in his existence and power?
Q. Why do people overlook and scoff at the power of the one true king of the gods, Zeus? There are books mentioning his existence. Heck, even humans claimed to interact with Him! That's eyewitness testimony to his existence, as well as his son (Hercules)! And he was acknowledged and realized way before the false Judeo-Christian gods. So why do people pretend the powerful Zeus Almighty does not exist? Asked by Bruce Campbell - Fri Nov 20 16:32:10 2009 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments A. You are wrong! Flying spaghetti monster is the true God and I know because he saved me. Stop worshiping false God's and repent or the invisible pink unicorn will consume you.
