Archaeology, or archeology (from Greek ἀρχαιολογία, archaiologia – ἀρχαῖος, arkhaīos, "ancient"; and -λογία, -logiā, "-logy"), is the study of past human societies, primarily through the recovery and analysis of the material culture and environmental data which they have left behind, which includes artifacts, architecture, biofacts and cultural landscapes. Due to the fact that archaeology employs a wide range of different procedures, it can be considered to be both a science and a humanity, and in the United States it is thought of as a branch of anthropology, although in Europe is instead viewed as a separate discipline.

Archaeology studies human history from the development of the first stone tools in eastern Africa 2.5 million years ago up until recent decades. It is of most importance for learning about prehistoric societies, when there are no written records for historians to study, and which makes up over 99% of total human history, from the Palaeolithic till the advent of literacy. Archaeology has various different goals, which range from studying human evolution to cultural evolution and understanding culture history.

The discipline involves surveyance, excavation and eventually analysis of data collected in order to learn more about the past. In broad scope, archaeology relies on cross-disciplinary research. It draws upon anthropology, history, art history, classics, ethnology, geography, geology, linguistics, physics, information sciences, chemistry, statistics, paleoecology, paleontology, paleozoology, paleoethnobotany, and paleobotany.

Archaeology developed out of antiquarianism in Europe during the 19th century, and has since become a discipline practiced across the world. Since its early development, various specific forms of archaeology have developed, including maritime archaeology, feminist archaeology and archaeoastronomy, and numerous different scientific techniques have been developed to aid archaeological investigation. Nonetheless, today, archaeologists face many problems, ranging from dealing with pseudoarchaeology to the looting of artefacts and opposition to the excavation of human remains.

What to wear to an archaeology conference dinner?
Q. Hey everyone, I'm going to my first archaeology conference. There will be a dinner tomorrow night and I'm wondering if anyone knows how dressy people usually get at conference dinners? Skirts, slacks, jeans? Thanks for the help! I'm going to be at the conference all day so I have to bring everything with me which is why I can't ask people once I get there tomorrow.

A. I would definitely dress in at least business attire. I used to have to go to Real Estate conferences and the ladies all wore skirt outfits or business dresses to the dinner. I would even say if you have a pants/jacket business outfit, that would be fine, but make sure it's classy. Can't go wrong with a skirt, button blouse and jacket set. Have fun! THese things are always a blast!

What are some colleges that offer archaeology as a major?
Q. Definately north of Washington D.C. and preferably no farther west than Wisconsin or Michigan, but that's not mandatory. I'd also be willing to go to school in Canada. If the schools also have a D1 cross country team it would be great! But if you don't know about that then you can just send me the links to those schools with archaeology majors in general.
